The Skylark

Fuiseóg                           Skylark                 Alauda Arvensis

There are 75 species of Larks. The best known is the Skylark which is found in Europe, Asia and Africa. The male Skylark sings to warn off other males and to attract females. The Skylark takes off from the grass and climbs several hundred feet into the air singing all the time. He hovers there for some minutes before dropping to the ground like a stone. He does this time and time again throughout the day during the Spring. One thing that makes them different from song birds is their hind toe which is very long and slightly curved. This is very uncomfortable for perching but they are far better runners than the other birds. They live mostly in grass and in the Moorlands and very seldom go into the woods. They eat insects and their larvae. They also eat large amounts of seeds. Living in the grass they are exposed to predators, relying on camouflage to save them and only move when about to be stepped on frightening their predators.
