Volcanoes
There are over 1300 active volcanoes in the world. When Krakatoa in Indonesia erupted people in Australia who were over 7500 km away heard the explosion. When Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. it buried Pompeii under 5 metres of rock and ash.

When they erupt they send clouds of gas, ash, steam, dust and smoke into the air. The dust and ash are blown around the world sometimes. If this happens it could block out some of the heat from the sun.

Hot molten rock called magma is thrown up through vents or craters. When it comes to the top it is called lava. Lava will destroy anything in its path. It eventually breaks down into rich soil. Underwater volcanoes can cause new islands that are very fertile.
