There is a long history of education in Croghan. In August 1835 a school opened in Cannakill. Mr. Dunne was the first teacher and he had taught at the hedge school at High Gate before that. His daughter taught at Cannakill and so did Mr. Killian, Mr. Meagher and Mr. Casey. There was a hedge school in Coole run by Mr. Burke. He was a small farmer who died in Coole and is buried in Ballyburley. An English visitor Mr. Lewis wrote about the Cannakill school. He said that it was supported by local contributions and attended by about 160 boys and 130 girls. There was a school where Mr. Fennessey's old house is. It was replaced by the present Community Centre in 1930. Master Quinn and Miss Glennon taught there. Master Fennessey, Mrs. Egan and Miss Boland taught there too. In 1963 the present school was built. Master Fennessey, Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Egan were the first teachers. When Mrs Egan retired Mrs. Lynch came. Mrs. Fallon replaced her in 1974. Master Hickey became Principal in 1980 and Mrs. Greene came here in 1993. In September 2000 Mrs. Doyle became the fourth teacher in the school. Mrs Butler our shared resource teacher started in January 2003. We have won many things including a prize
in the Environmental Awareness Awards for our mural which was all about
Croghan. We won the County 3 teacher football championship in 1987,
