St.Patrick
St Patrick praying.                                   St. Patrick and shamrock.
St. Patrick was born about 389 A.D. and died around 461. He was probably born in Wales. He was brought to Ireland by Niall of the Nine Hostages and sold as a slave. He was brought up as a Christian and even when he was working as a pigherd on Slemish Mt. In Antrim, he always said his prayers. God helped him to escape and he went home. He was ordained a priest and then a bishop and he heard the Irish people calling him to come back and teach them about Jesus. Patrick returned and is our Patron Saint today.
St. Patrick is said to have visited Croghan Hill. His horse is supposed to have jumped down the hill, fell and left the mark of its knee on a stone. The stone is still at St. Patrick's well. If the stone is moved it is said to come back again though it is unlucky to move it. Big crowds still come to Croghan Hill on March 17th each year, St. Patrick's Day. Patrick travelled all over Ireland on his mission and converted most of the people to Christianity.

St. Patrick held the shamrock
Aloft for all to see
And said "Behold this symbol
Of the Holy Trinity
Of Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
One, yet one in three."

St. Patrick's name in Irish is Naomh Padraig and shamrock is seamróg.
