Muire na nGaeil

St. Brigid is often known as Mary of the Gaeil which is a wonderful tribute to a remarkable woman.St. Brigid's well is in Cannakill and was often resorted to for cures in days gone by.
Invocation To St.Bride.
Dear St Brigid of the kine
Bless these little fields of mine,
The pastures and the shady trees,
Bless the butter and the cheese,
Bless the cows with coats of silk
And the brimming pails of milk,
Bless the hedgerows, and I pray
Bless the seed beneath the clay,
Bless the hay and bless the grass,
Bless the seasons as they pass,
And heaven's blessings will prevail,
Brigid --- Mary of the Gael.

St. Brigid is still very important to Croghan people. Our church and school are named in her honour. The local G.A.A. club are also called St.Brigids. Making St.Brigid's crosses from rushes is still a local tradition on her feast day, February 1st.

Her roots in earth her hands outstretched
To shelter all both man and beast.
We know that spring is here to stay
On February first, St. Brigid's Day.
