| Bord na Mona was set up in 1936. They developed
the bogs around Croghan to produce milled peat. This is sold to the E.S.B.
to make electricity at Clonbullogue Power Station. The peat is taken to
the Station by narrow gauge railway.
Before B.N.M. enter a bog it is called virgin bog. They first drain the bog using a big machine called a disc ditcher. All the machines have wide wheels so they won't sink in the bog. The drains divide the bog into fields. Every year the triple miller digs up the top 15cm. of the bog. Then the spoon harrow turns this up until it is dry like sand. Next comes the harvester. It is a gigantic machine that lifts the peat from each field and puts it into the next field. Finally the peat from 6 fields on each side is left in a heap in the middle. This is called a pile. It is covered with polythene and stays there until it is wanted at the power station or briquette factory. Bord na Mona has given great employment in this area. There is a new power station built in Clonbullogue. By Aidan Comer.
