Archaeological Finds
On the 2nd of December 1997, thirteen skeletons  were found on Peter Moore's land in Croghan Demesne. The master brought the whole school to see them.   Archaeologist Dominick Delaney spotted eleven skeletons which had been uncovered by a digger.  Immediately digging was stopped and thirteen were later exposed by the rain.   They are said to date back to early Christian times even as early as 400 AD.  At first it was thought by many people to be a Famine Grave because during the Famine people would have been weak and some of the graves were only a few feet below the surface.   However, it was not a common grave.   All the corpses were facing the rising sun which shows that they were Christians.  One skeleton had perfect teeth so they lived in an age without sugar or sweets.   Iron slag was found on the site which indicates some kind of  iron making.    There may be hundreds of people buried on this site.   We will never know because the O.P.W. ordered the graves to be covered over. Four stone boulders were placed to mark the site.
