The Goldfinch

THE GOLDFINCH

The goldfinches are the most attractive birds we have. They fly from place to place and call each other with twittering notes. They eat small seeds of various kinds of weeds. Their favourite food is the thistle. They live in the rather open country. They are deep cups. They start to nest in May. It has a lovely golden wing and a red and black head. The finch has a thin pointed bill which enables them to extract seeds from plants like teasels. The nest is built up of forked twigs made well away from the trunk of a tree. The northern birds move south in winter.
