Down

The name for Down in Irish is An Dun. This means the Fort. There are 444 acres in Down. The Grand Canal flows through it. There is an old mill which was owned by the Mulligans in the 1800's. The mill was used for grinding oats into meal. It was driven by water which flows through Down.  There is a ring fort in Down.There were high walls around it to protect the farmers from wild animals. There is an entrance at the back which goes in about 3 metres,but no one is permited to enter.At the top its like someone scooped a lump out of it.
There is a stream that flows through Down called the Stick. It starts near Moore's and flows through Aghmore and Down. It flows under the Canal and it is a tributary of the Barrow. The population of Down lane is 48 people and there are15 houses.
