Derryarkin comes from the Irish Doire Aircin.
This means the Oak Wood of the Young Pigs. In days gone by this area
was covered in oak forests.The people used the acorns to feed their
pigs. By 1853 the Earl of Charleville, from Tullamore owned 850 acres
of land in Derryarkin. The area of Derryarkin is 982 acres. Other landowners
at this time were; Michael Egan, Patrick Smullen, Patrick Hannon, Laurence
Hannon and John Egan. Landowners now include Mick Greene, Tom Boland,
Johnny Egan and Paddy and Angela Lynam. People who live here now are
Morans, Hannons, Bolands, Lynams and Greenes.Back in 1841 there was
59 people with 10 houses. In 1851 the population dropped by 7 with 8
houses. In 2004 there are 22 people with 5 houses. |
