Ballybeg is beside Ballyfore and in Irish is Baile Bheag which means the Small Town. It is said that the the up land in Ballybeg has a good fattening quality. There are wells in Ballybeg. The most notable well is St. Patrick's Well. This is a sacred or holy well. The well is on the northeastern slope of the hill. People say that the well sprung up where St. Patrick's horse landed. There is a stone at the well with the hoof marks of his horse on it. It is said that if the stone is taken it will return to its rightful place and the wather at the well cannot be boiled.Recently ancient remains have been found by archaeologist. There is a mass rock in Ballybeg. There are three houses in Bally beg. The oldest house in Ballybeg was built in the 1930s. John Paul the Pope flew over Croghan Hill in a helicopter on his visit to Clonmacnoise in 1979. On March the 17th each year the well is blessed and a rosary is said. This tradition has been going on for years. Today the population is 24.
